Integrating Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy into Play Therapy Practice

CE Hours 3 1.5 Play Therapy Skills and Methods 1.5 Play Therapy Special Topics

About this live event

Children often communicate their trauma through play rather than words. This presentation focuses on how trauma-informed play therapy can be thoughtfully integrated with Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to meet children at their developmental level while maintaining evidence-based care. Participants will learn how TF-CBT components can be translated into symbolic, experiential, and expressive play interventions that support safety, regulation, trauma processing, and resilience. Through case and practical activity examples, this program emphasizes flexibility, creativity, and clinical attunement while honoring the structure and goals of TF-CBT. Clinicians will leave with concrete strategies for helping children process trauma in ways that feel accessible, empowering, and developmentally appropriate. A Time for Play ACCESS workshops are provided in Hybrid format. Attendees may come in-person to United Way Houston venue or participate virtually via Zoom.

Learning Objectives

  • 1) Describe how trauma-informed principles and core components of TF-CBT can be developmentally adapted and implemented through play therapy when working with children who have experienced trauma.
  • 2) Identify at least three play therapy interventions that align with specific TF-CBT components (e.g., psychoeducation, affect regulation, trauma narration, and cognitive processing) while maintaining treatment fidelity.
  • 3) Apply trauma-informed clinical decision-making in play therapy by integrating caregiver involvement, cultural responsiveness, and developmental considerations within the TF-CBT framework.
