About this course

This continuing education event teaches participants skills for documenting Play Therapy sessions ethically and effectively.  Presentation will review the purposes, stylistic components, and goals of clinical documentation particularly in the context of Play Therapy.  Participants will receive documentation templates and practice applying skills to document a Play Therapy practice session. Completion of a Post-test and Evaluation is required for participants to receive CE credit.

Learning Objectives

  • 1. List at least five key aspects of Play Therapy sessions that should be documented per ethical and best practices.
  • 2. Develop a Play Therapy documentation protocol that upholds ethical principles and standards.
  • 3. Describe two benefits of Play Therapy documentation that align with person-centered theory and case conceptualization.
  • 4. Apply the Play Therapist’s SOAP note to clinically document a Play Therapy session.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Steven L. Parks, LCSW-S, MBA, RPT-S

    Steven L. Parks is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Board Approved Supervisor and serves in the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work as a full-time clinical Senior Lecturing Faculty professor. Steven is a Registered Play Therapist & Supervisor (RPT-S) and the Executive Director of the A Time for Play nonprofit organization based in Houston, TX. He also maintains a private practice in Sugar Land, Texas and specializes in working with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing trauma symptoms, depression, anxiety, and externalizing behaviors. Steven has a Bachelor’s of Arts degree of Psychology from Texas Tech University, a Master’s of Business Administration degree from University of Houston Bauer College of Business, and a Master’s of Social Work degree from the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. Steven volunteers regularly with the National Association of Social Workers Texas (NASWTx), and serves as the Board Chair of Tony's Place, a local LGBTQ+ Community Organization.

The mission of A Time for Play is to promote access to effective mental health services within the community, primarily by educating mental health professionals on the theories, benefits, techniques, and skills of Play Therapy and ethical clinical practice. A Time for Play delivers mental health training services to local, state, national, and international audiences. The nonprofit expands access by providing continuing education workshops in-person, virtually, by request, and on-demand. A Time for Play is actively diversifying the profession of Play Therapy and expanding access to Play Therapy services through scholarship opportunities.

  • ATfP Course Completion
    To complete an asynchronous A Time for Play Therapy CE workshop, learners must review the learning objectives and print or download all training materials. Next, learners should watch the course modules, following along with the presentation handouts and completing all practice activities. In the majority of workshops, learners will be asked to pause the presentation video to complete an activity to practice the skills that they are learning. After watching all of the course modules and completing all practice activities, learners may move on to the post-test. Learners must complete the post-test with a passing score of 80% or higher in order to receive CE Credit. After passing the post-test, learners will be asked to complete a course evaluation. After completing the evaluation, learners will be able to download their CE Certificate.
